Eiswanderer 2024
"Eiswanderer" (2023/24) is a piece for solo accordion, inspired by "Der Leiermann," the final movement of Franz Schubert's "Winterreise." Drawing from Müller’s poem and Schubert’s music, "Eiswanderer" tries to capture different aspects of the wandering hurdy-gurdy man - that is almost surreal: barefoot on ice, trembling, frozen, exhausted, fragile, exposed, ignored, lonely, melancholic and at the same time enduring, resilient and courageous.
The piece explores the physical, emotional and psychological stages of being cold, as well as the concepts of practice and failure, and the blurred lines between performance and life. The accordion becomes an extension of the personality of “Der Leiermann”, capturing the motion and stasis of his eternal, solitary journey.
